Why is it called tipping paper?
The paper gets its name from Japan, where it was first produced in the early 20th century by Tohoku Paper Co., Sendai. It was named after its resemblance to the outer skin of a local plant called metasequoia. In the 1930s, the paper was sold to Shanghai and its name was introduced into China.The production of unprinted paper is called white tipping base paper or plain tipping paper.
